D1 Frequently Asked Questions

D1 Air Frequently asked questions:

1. Can I use all actual Profoto Light Shaping Tools?

The D1 offers a perfect light quality in combination with umbrellas, Profoto softboxes, D1 grids and Softlight reflectors. It is also possible to use the Zoom, Widezoom, Telezoom, Magnum reflectors and the ProGlobe with good results – just the light spread is slightly narrower than on a ProHead.

2. When do I need the round glass dome?

The optional glass dome does increase the light spread of the D1 and is useful to get a wider light spread with the Zoom, Widezoom,, Telezoom, Magnum reflectors or the ProGlobe.

3. Why does the D1 have a different construction of the reflector/protection glass than other Profoto flash heads?

The D1 in basic configuration with flat glass is optimized for the light shaping tools that are preferred by most monoflash users. The flat front is very robust and solid, perfect for transportation – it is even possible to place a D1 upside-down on the floor.

4. Can I use the D1 without reflector?

Yes. The D1 has an integrated reflector that offers a very even light distribution over an angle of about 80° (flat glass). Special D1 grids can be mounted directly on the front of the D1 to limit the light spread.

5. Can I used the D1 without glass cover?

Basically yes. But we don’t recommend this. The glass cover is important to provide an optimal light quality (“What you see is what you get.”) and to protect the user and subject against hot or broken glass parts. Never use any flash without glass cover – for your own safety!

6. Do you offer the D1 with PocketWizard?

No. The D1’s are available with an integrated Profoto Air module that is a reliable radio sync AND remote system. But it is possible to connect any PocketWizard with a 3,5mm to 3,5mm sync cable.

7. Can I power the D1 with a standard inverter?

Many of the inverters available do not work properly and can, in worst case, destroy the connected units. We recommend you refrain from using them till further announcement.
