DESIGN S – SWEDISH DESIGN AWARD

Design S is Sweden’s leading design award. Design S singles out creative and innovative solutions in every imaginable area of products, services and environments, regardless of the design field. The award has been presented every second year since 2006. Before that, Svensk Form (the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design) presented the Excellent Swedish Design Awards from 1983 to 2002.

Design S rewards some of the best examples of Swedish designers and producers in international cooperation – it is a design award of international rank adapted to Swedish conditions. Design S rewards both designers and companies. The award does not have any traditional division into categories. Instead, each individual entry is assessed based on the problems faced by companies and organisations, the end solution, and how design expertise contributed to the result.
Instead of prize money, the nominees receive long-term attention in Sweden and abroad. This exposure is achieved via an exhibition, workshops, seminars, printed materials, online publication and the media. Those selected to receive the Design S award from among the nominees can use the Design S logo as a quality label.

The international touring exhibition is unique to Design S. The exhibition presents products and processes which have succeeded in solving the challenges that faced them. This might involve increasing sales, successful brand repositioning, or products that contribute to social development, save lives, simplify work life, increase accessibility, or help us achieve a sustainable society. Or, quite simply, they might be solutions that make everyday life easier and more pleasant. The exhibition can also be seen online.

The aim of the Design S award is to provide a broad picture of contemporary Swedish design, to stimulate the development of design, to single out quality, and to broaden knowledge about good design. Well executed design adds value and can improve conditions for people, companies and organisations. The award is intended to inspire industry and public sector decision makers to use design to increase growth and competitiveness and to improve social welfare. Good design develops society in general.

Design S is operated by Svensk Form. Svensk Form (the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design) is a not-for-profit membership organisation mandated by the Swedish government to promote Swedish design at home and abroad. The Society was founded in 1845 and has a presence throughout Sweden. Svensk Form aims to broaden and deepen attitudes towards issues of form and design and to demonstrate the possibilities that design can give to the individual, culture and society. Svensk Form has a broad range of activities whose primary tools are creating exhibitions, transmitting knowledge, acting as an intermediary for services, and opinion building. Another important forum is the design magazine FORM and the Society’s digital picture archive containing unique material.
